School districts facing counselor shortages are formalizing peer support programs with structured training and staff oversight. Student volunteers learn how to listen, document concerns, and refer peers to licensed professionals.

Program coordinators stress that peers are not substitutes for clinical services. Their role is early detection and connection, especially in schools where students delay seeking help from adults.

Initial results show stronger referral follow-through when peer leaders are embedded across extracurricular groups rather than limited to student government teams.

Districts expanding the model are adding parental communication guides and escalation scripts so families understand how referrals are triggered and handled.
