A higher average sea level allows tides, waves and storm surge to reach farther inland.
Sea-level rise is often pictured as a future line on a map, but its effects arrive in smaller, repeated steps. When the average sea is higher, ordinary high tides start from a higher base, waves reach farther inland and a hurricane’s storm surge can cover more ground. For Jamaica, where communities, tourism, transport and utilities cluster near the coast, even gradual change can make damaging events more frequent and expensive.
Most global sea-level rise comes from two processes caused by warming: ocean water expands as it heats, and land-based ice melts into the sea. Local water levels can also differ from the global average because of currents, winds, gravitational effects and movement of the land itself. That is why measurements and local coastal studies matter alongside global projections.
The IPCC assessment of small islands concludes that sea level will very likely continue rising around small islands. It also finds that higher seas, storm surge and waves will worsen coastal inundation, erosion and saltwater intrusion. Those hazards can interact: a damaged reef or mangrove belt may leave a shoreline less protected from the next event.
